Acidic bodies are unhealthy bodies. But many people are not aware that acid in the body is a serious health risk because this acidic environment is an ideal ground for illnesses, bacteria, and yeast to thrive in. Even more, an overly acidic body deprives vital organs and bones of essential minerals in order to neutralize the acid and eliminate it from the body. As a result of this, the mineral content in the body, including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium, can be severely reduced thus leading to damage that can go undetected for years, until the mineral levels become dangerously low and result in acidosis.

Acid can be caused by lots of common foods such as dairy, grains, meats and sugar. The consumption of such foods consequently leads to formation of acidic metabolic waste which the body continually produces and which has to be neutralized or excreted in some way. Supplying your body with more alkaline foods is vital in order to neutralize the constant acid formation.

These health issues are caused by mild acidosis (poor pH balance):
  • Inflamed or sensitive gums and cavities
  • Poor immunity
  • Sciatica, lumbago, stiff neck
  • Respiratory issues, shortness of breath, coughing
  • Yeast proliferation
  • Lack of energy and chronic fatigue
  • Cardiovascular damage, such as tightening of blood vessels and decrease in oxygen supply
  • Heart issues, arrhythmia, tachycardia
  • Weight gain, obesity and diabetes
  • Bladder and kidney infections
  • Increased free radical damage
  • Premature aging
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Osteoporosis, weak brittle bones, hip fractures, and bone spurs
  • Headaches, confusion, sleepiness
  • Joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid accumulation
  • Allergies, acne
Can the body itself regulate pH?
Yes it can, but this brings on additional side effects. Apart from the stomach, which is alkaline, all tissues and fluids in the body are with normal pH. Furthermore, all of the systems in the body have a wide pH range, partly to be able to change in order to maintain the blood pH, except for the blood, which must have a very narrow range of 7.35 to 7.45.  For instance, when the system becomes overly acidic, the blood takes alkaline forming elements from the digestive enzyme system of the small intestine, which in turn creates a less favorable environment for proper digestion. So, in conclusion, although the body can regulate pH on its own, it does so by affecting the proper function of other systems.

Knowing your pH
It’s really important to have your pH tested and get an accurate numeric representation of the current level of acidification in your body. A healthy average pH reading will range anywhere from 6.75 to 7.25. The optimal pH numeric reading is 7.36.

Taste alone cannot tell if food is acidic or alkaline
A great illustration of this is lemon. While it is considered to be an acidic fruit, it is in fact an alkaline forming food because during the process of digestion, the acids are oxidized into carbon dioxide and water, and therefore they don’t create an acid environment in the system.

In addition, the most important alkalizing minerals in the body are calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Therefore, alkaline forming foods are those with high content of these minerals.  As most foods contain both acid and alkaline minerals, they are considered acidic if there is a higher concentration of acidic minerals and vice versa.

The body has limits
Food intake is vital in maintaining the acid-alkaline balance because the body has limits for how much it can compensate for acid imbalance. In fact, numerous diseases and general malaise result from the body’s effort to rebalance its internal environment.

In general, the body becomes more acidic if your diet is primarily based on acid forming foods, including large quantities of meats, grains, dairy, and sugars. On the other hand, excessive intake of alkaline producing foods such as greens, fruits, sea vegetables, makes your body too alkaline. Therefore, keeping a balance is vital.

How does your body respond to specific foods?
Your dominant constitutional type is what determines your body’s response to various foods. So, in case your dominant type is oxidative, then fruits and vegetables make the body more acidic, while proteins make it more alkaline. If, on the other hand, your dominant type is the autonomic system (ANS), then proteins make your body more acidic, while fruits and vegetables make it more alkaline.

How to improve your alkalinity
  1. Check your pH regularly
  2. Drink lots of water (alkaline water when possible)
  3. Remove acidic foods
  4. Replace a traditional lunch with a large green salad.
  5. Use lettuce leaves and collard greens as wraps.
  6. Avoid processed foods as much as possible
  7. Cut out soda, sugars and coffee. Drink herbal tea, herbal coffee and green drinks instead
  8. Drink coconut or almond milk instead of dairy milks
  9. Include green juices or smoothies to your diet

What you eat matters
Although maintaining normal pH levels asks for a lot of effort, once you begin to feel more energetic and your overall health improves, you’ll appreciate the rewards of what you are doing.

It’s indisputable that the food you eat directly affects your overall health. Or, in the words of Ann Wigmore, founder of the renowned Hippocrates Health Institute, “The food you eat can be either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.”
